What Is a Public Notice?

A Public Notice is the broadest of the legal-style notice categories: a formal declaration published in a newspaper and addressed not to one named party, but to the general public — or, more precisely, to "all whom it may concern." It is used whenever someone wants to put a fact, change, or intention on the public record, so that anyone with an interest, objection, or competing claim has a fair opportunity to come forward within a stated time, after which the matter is treated as settled.

Unlike a Court Notice, a public notice does not require a judge's order — it is usually published voluntarily, as prudent practice, or to satisfy a routine requirement set by a company, regulator, or industry body. Unlike a Legal Notice, it is rarely a formal pre-litigation step demanding a specific response from one recipient; it is simply informing the world. This is what makes the category so wide: individuals selling property, companies replacing a lost certificate, and partnerships winding up all use the same basic publish-and-wait mechanism, even though the underlying matters have nothing to do with one another.

The most frequently booked type in this category is a property public notice in newspaper form — published before a sale, purchase, or auction to invite objections from anyone with a competing claim.
