Can I change my name in my service book?
Yes, absolutely. Government and defence employees are required to obtain a Central Gazette Notification as the mandatory legal instrument for changing their name on service records. A newspaper ad alone or a self-declaration is not sufficient and your application will be rejected without the Gazette. Delaying the correction can hold up promotions, ACR entries, allowances, and eventual pension processing.

The 3-Step Gazette Process for Service Records
Employee-Specific Affidavit
Drafted on ₹100 non-judicial stamp paper. We include your employee ID, service number, rank/designation, and department name in the affidavit so the department can match the Gazette to your service book without any follow-up. Attested by a Notary Public.
Dual Newspaper Publication
One English and one regional-language daily circulating in your district of posting or hometown. Original clippings secured.
Central Gazette Filing at Delhi
Bharat Kosh fee paid, CD prepared, dossier hand-delivered at the Department of Publication, Civil Lines, New Delhi. Once the Gazette is published (3–4 weeks), you submit the e-Gazette copy with a departmental application to your head of office, MPO, or record office for service book update.
Armed Forces: Part II Orders & Record Office
For Army, Navy, and Air Force personnel, updating the service record, pay book, and PPO requires a Part II Order. Your unit or Record Office will strictly require a Central Gazette Notification before publishing the Part II Order for a name change (whether for yourself, spouse, or dependents). We process hundreds of Gazette notifications for defence personnel, ensuring the affidavit is drafted perfectly to clear Record Office scrutiny on the first attempt.
