Yes, absolutely. A Central Gazette Notification is the mandatory legal proof required by UIDAI if you want to change your full name, change your first name, or update your Aadhaar name after using your two standard updates. Without it, your update will be rejected at the Aadhaar Seva Kendra. For minor spelling corrections within the 2-update limit, standard Proof of Identity is sufficient, but a Central Gazette is universally preferred because it also works for PAN, passport, and banks.

The Two-Update Limit Explained
UIDAI's guidance on Aadhaar updates is clear: the name field can be updated only twice in a lifetime using standard Proof of Identity documents such as your passport, PAN card, voter ID, or driving licence. Any further update — or any complete change of name / first-name change from day one — requires a Central Gazette Notification (or a State Gazette) as the Proof of Identity document.
This rule protects the integrity of Aadhaar as an identity system. UIDAI's own FAQ specifies that when a resident applies for a beyond-limit update, they must submit the Gazette Notification along with an old Proof of Identity that carries the name currently in Aadhaar — so the enrolment operator can verify the identity chain.
For a complete name change or a first-name change (for example, Pankaj Kumar to Abhinay K Singh), UIDAI advises applying directly through a Gazette Notification — even if your two updates are still available — because a self-declared PoI is not sufficient for that level of change.

Both ads must carry: old name, new name, complete address (same as affidavit), father's or husband's name, and the notary's details.

Updating Aadhaar at the Seva Kendra

1. Download your e-Gazette PDF
We send you the exact page number and issue reference. Download the PDF from egazette.gov.in and print two clear A4 copies — one for the Seva Kendra, one for your records.
2. Visit your nearest Aadhaar Seva Kendra
Book a slot on the UIDAI website or walk in. Carry the printed Gazette copy, your existing Aadhaar, and one old PoI carrying the name currently in Aadhaar.
3. Fill the update form & give biometrics
Fill the update form with the exact new name from the Gazette (case-perfect). The operator scans the Gazette, captures your biometrics, and issues an URN (Update Request Number). Keep the acknowledgement slip.
4. Track the URN online
Track the URN at myaadhaar.uidai.gov.in. Standard turnaround is 5–10 working days. Once approved, download the updated e-Aadhaar — the physical Aadhaar reprint reaches you by post in 2–3 weeks.
The Address-Match Rule Nobody Tells You
UIDAI's official position is straightforward: the address in the Gazette Notification must match the address in your Aadhaar when the Gazette is used as Proof of Identity for a name change. Applicants who miss this often face rejection at the Seva Kendra even though the Gazette itself is valid.
This is why we insist on seeing your current Aadhaar copy before drafting the affidavit — so the address printed on the affidavit, on the newspaper ads, and ultimately in the Gazette all match your Aadhaar exactly.
If your address has changed and you also want to update it in Aadhaar, the address update should happen separately using an address-proof document — not through the Gazette.

Add Husband's Name in C/O
You keep your existing name and add "C/O [Husband's Name]". While sometimes possible with just a marriage certificate, a Central Gazette Notification prevents rejection at the Aadhaar Seva Kendra and ensures permanent acceptance.
Change Surname Only
Adopt husband's surname while keeping your first name. Marriage certificate + husband's PoI works if you still have both name updates available; Gazette makes it universally accepted (banks, PAN, passport).
Full Name Change
Change both first name and surname (e.g., new name after marriage in some communities). Central Gazette required — UIDAI does not accept a self-declared full name change.
