Mandatory Legal Process

Demat & Mutual Fund KYC Name Change

A Central Gazette Notification is the mandatory legal proof required to update your name across demat accounts, mutual fund folios, and the central KRA system. Without it, your application will be rejected. Malik Advertising handles the complete Gazette process end-to-end.

Do I need a Gazette for demat / mutual fund name change?

Yes, absolutely. SEBI's KYC Registration Agency (KRA) framework requires a Central Gazette Notification as the mandatory legal proof for name modification. Without it, your application will be rejected by NSDL, CDSL, CAMS, KFin, and every SEBI-registered broker.

The best part — centralised update: update your KRA record once, and every mutual fund folio, demat account, and SEBI intermediary auto-syncs the new name within days. No per-broker paperwork if you use the KRA cascade properly.

One Update, Every Investment Account

KRA (KYC Registration Agency) is a SEBI-authorised entity that holds and maintains a central KYC record for every investor in India. Once your KRA record is updated with the Gazette, every SEBI-regulated intermediary auto-syncs the new name within days.

The 5 SEBI-authorised KRAs: CAMS KRA, KFin KRA, CVL KRA, NDML KRA, and DotEx KRA. Update at any one of them — they share data in real time.

This is why demat / MF name change is actually easier than bank name change — you fix one central record, everything else follows automatically.

What Gets Updated

  • Every mutual fund folio linked to your PAN
  • Demat accounts (NSDL & CDSL)
  • Broker accounts (Zerodha, Groww, ICICI Direct, etc.)
  • PMS & AIF investments
  • NPS (via CRA)
  • Bonds, debentures & corporate FDs

CAMS / KFin Update Step by Step

1. Update PAN + Aadhaar first (with Gazette)

KRA verification is PAN-linked. Update Aadhaar first (5–10 days), then PAN via Form 49A (3–5 days for e-PAN).

2. Submit KYC modification at CAMS or KFin

Download the KYC modification form from camsonline.com or kfintech.com. Submit at any of their branch offices with printed Gazette + updated Aadhaar + updated PAN + 2 photographs. Some CAMS/KFin locations also accept online submission with e-Sign.

3. KRA record updates centrally (7–10 days)

Once CAMS/KFin processes the update, the central KRA record is refreshed. All 5 SEBI KRAs share data in real time.

4. Mutual funds & brokers auto-sync

Within 3–7 days after KRA update, every mutual fund folio and SEBI-registered broker account reflects the new name automatically. No per-account paperwork needed for discount brokers.

5. Demat account update via broker (DP)

Submit a demat modification form (through your broker's app or branch) with Gazette + KRA-updated proof. Broker forwards to NSDL/CDSL; depository reflects the new name in 5–7 days.

Demat & Mutual Fund Questions Answered

Is a Gazette required for demat / mutual fund name change? +
Yes, absolutely. SEBI's KRA framework requires a Central Gazette Notification as the mandatory legal proof. Without it, your application will be rejected by NSDL, CDSL, CAMS, KFin, and SEBI-registered brokers.
What is the difference between NSDL and CDSL for name change? +
Two SEBI-regulated depositories where demat accounts are held. Both accept a Central Gazette. Update is initiated through your broker (Depository Participant/DP) — not directly with NSDL or CDSL.
How does CAMS / KFin central KYC update work for mutual funds? +
CAMS and KFin are RTAs that handle mutual fund records for most AMCs. Submit KYC modification form + Gazette at any CAMS or KFin office (or online) — update reflects across every mutual fund folio linked to your PAN within 7–10 days.
What is KRA and why does it matter? +
KRA (KYC Registration Agency) is a SEBI-authorised entity holding central KYC records. Once your KRA record is updated using the Gazette, every SEBI intermediary auto-syncs the new name within days. Single most efficient path for investors with multiple accounts.
Do I need to update name at every broker separately? +
If KRA is updated centrally, most brokers auto-sync within 3–7 days. Full-service brokers with in-house KYC may require a separate KYC modification form. Discount brokers (Zerodha, Groww, Upstox, Angel One, ICICI Direct, HDFC Securities) mostly rely on KRA sync.
Will my existing shares, MF units, and portfolio be affected? +
No. Your holdings are linked to your PAN and demat account number — not to name spelling. Name update refreshes display name; portfolio, holdings, capital gains history, and dividend records transfer intact.
What about my mutual fund SIPs after name change? +
SIP mandates continue uninterrupted. Bank auto-debit is linked to your bank account and PAN, not to the name spelling on MF folio. Update bank KYC and PAN first, then update MF folio name via CAMS/KFin — SIPs run through the transition.
How long does the demat / MF name update take after Gazette publication? +
After Gazette (3–4 weeks) and PAN + Aadhaar updated (3–10 days), KRA update via CAMS/KFin takes 7–10 working days. Demat account (via broker DP) takes another 5–7 days.
Does name change affect my capital gains reporting to the IT Department? +
No. Capital gains and STT records are linked to your PAN, not name spelling. IT Department's AIS will reflect the updated name once PAN is updated. All historical transactions remain attached to your PAN.
How to update NPS (National Pension System) alongside demat? +
NPS is handled by CRA (Protean or K-Fin) using the same PAN + KRA framework. Once PAN and KRA are updated with Gazette, submit S2 form to your NPS PoP or online via CRA portal. 15–20 days.
