Mandatory Legal Process

Voter ID Name Change via Central Gazette

A Central Gazette Notification is the mandatory legal proof required by the Election Commission of India to update your name on your Voter ID (EPIC) card. Without it, your Form 8 application on voters.eci.gov.in will be rejected. Malik Advertising handles the complete Gazette process end-to-end.

Is a Gazette required for Voter ID name change?

Yes, absolutely. The Election Commission of India requires a Central Gazette Notification as the mandatory legal proof for Form 8 (Correction of Entries in the Electoral Roll). Without it, your application will be rejected.

EPIC number stays same: your Voter ID number is permanent. Only the printed name and photo on the card change. New card is delivered by post to your registered address.

Filing Form 8 on voters.eci.gov.in

1. Update Aadhaar first (with Gazette as PoI)

ECI Form 8 processing uses Aadhaar linkage for verification. Update Aadhaar first at a Seva Kendra using the printed Gazette. 5–10 days.

2. Log in to voters.eci.gov.in

Register / sign in with mobile OTP or existing EPIC number. Navigate to Forms → Form 8 — Correction of Entries in Electoral Roll.

3. Fill Form 8 & upload Gazette

Enter new name (must match updated Aadhaar). Upload the printed e-Gazette PDF as supporting document. Submit.

4. ERO verifies & approves

Your local Electoral Registration Officer (ERO) verifies the application. Most cases processed online without in-person visit. Turnaround: 15–30 days.

5. Updated EPIC card delivered by post

Same EPIC number, updated name and photo. Delivered to your registered address in 10–15 days. Digital e-EPIC also downloadable from voters.eci.gov.in.

Voter ID Name Change Questions Answered

Is a Gazette Notification required for Voter ID name change? +
Yes, absolutely. ECI requires a Central Gazette Notification as the mandatory legal proof for Form 8. Without it, your application will be rejected.
What is Form 8 for Voter ID? +
ECI's Application for Correction of Entries in the Electoral Roll. Used for name correction, address change, and photo replacement on Voter ID (EPIC). Filed online through voters.eci.gov.in or physically with your local ERO.
How do I file Form 8 online via voters.eci.gov.in? +
Log in to voters.eci.gov.in with mobile OTP or existing EPIC number. Select 'Correction of Entries in Electoral Roll' — Form 8. Fill new name (must match Aadhaar), upload Gazette PDF, submit. ERO verifies in 15–30 days.
Will my EPIC number change? +
No. EPIC number is a permanent identifier. Only the printed name on the card changes. New EPIC card is issued with same EPIC number but updated name and photo, delivered by post in 20–30 days.
Do I need to visit the ERO office? +
Not always. Online Form 8 with Aadhaar-linked verification is processed without in-person visit in most cases. If ERO requires physical verification, you'll receive a notice with a slot.
What if my electoral roll name is very different from Aadhaar? +
Central Gazette is the strongest linking proof. Update Aadhaar first with Gazette so both records show the same name. Then file Form 8 with Gazette + updated Aadhaar. ERO uses Gazette as authoritative bridge.
Does Voter ID name change affect my voter status? +
No. Registration remains active throughout. Name update simply refreshes your printed EPIC record; right to vote is unaffected. You can vote using existing EPIC number even before new card arrives.
How long does the Voter ID name update take after Gazette publication? +
After Gazette (3–4 weeks) and Aadhaar update (5–10 days), Form 8 processing by ERO takes 15–30 days. Physical EPIC card delivery adds 10–15 days by post.
Can I file Voter ID name change from a different state than where I'm registered? +
Form 8 is filed with the ERO of your registered constituency. You can submit online Form 8 from anywhere, but processing ERO is your registered constituency's. If you've moved states, use Form 8A first to transfer, then Form 8 for name change.
Do state Election Commissions have their own process? +
No. Voter ID is issued under the Election Commission of India (ECI), a Central body. State CEOs and district EROs implement ECI's uniform Form 8 process across all states. Gazette is accepted uniformly nationwide.
